How can we make new PDF text italic (if I don't have italic font)?

A:

The usual practice is to use italic version of the font. In case you
don't have italic version of the font there are couple of options:
- You can fake italic style using skew transform on text.
- You can omit font embedding so that the viewer will need to find a
missing font that matches given font properties. You would effectively
create a new PDF font (without embedding the font data), and would
then modify the font dictionary to indicate that the font is italic,
italic angle etc. The only problem with this approach is that PDF
viewers are not guaranteed to produce the correct result (i.e. the
correct substitute font may not be available etc).
