Word File Table of Contents Error

When you open a word file with a table of contents in the word editor, there is an error that the file cannot be opened normally. As an attachment below, I will send you one file with a table of contents and one file without a table of contents, so please check the symptoms.

I was able to reproduce the issue using the file with the content table.

After discussing this internally, we can confirm this is an issue from our side.

It looks like the issue is caused by an out-of-date Table of Contents (TOC) in the Word file. When we tested, clicking inside the TOC in Word and selecting “Update Table” (or “Update TOC”) refreshed it so the TOC was properly synced with the document contents. After updating, the file loaded normally in WebViewer.

For now, the simplest workaround is to update the TOC in Word before uploading the document. At the same time, our team will continue investigating why an outdated TOC prevents the document from rendering correctly, so we can provide a more permanent fix on our side.

When I updated the TOC in the file I provided and uploaded it to Demo’s Word Editor, the file does not load normally. How can I verify that it loads normally to the Editor after the TOC update?

Also, when is the update scheduled you mentioned?

Currently, there is no ETA; we are still investigating.

Here is the steps I made to update the TOC:

  1. I opened the file you provided on Microsoft Word
  2. right-clicked on the TOC
  3. clicked on “Update field”.
  4. A new window opened, and I chose “Update entire table”.
  5. After that, I saved the file and was able to open it on JavaScript Office Document DOCX Web Editor Demo | Apryse WebViewer
